Meet the Sporting Breeds
The AKC Sporting Group is made up of breeds developed to work in partnership with hunters, locating, flushing, or retrieving game both on land and in water. While each breed has its own history and style of work, they share common traits — intelligence, athleticism, and a strong desire to work alongside people. The group is generally divided into four categories based on how the dogs traditionally hunt, as well as a few Specialized Sporting Breeds that don't quite fit these labels:
Retrievers
bred to bring game back gently to hand.
Spaniels
known for flushing birds from cover.
which locate and indicate game with a steady point.
Pointers
Setters
who work at greater distances, using scent and movement to find birds and hold them for the hunter.
Though united by their working roots, every sporting breed approaches the field a little differently. Explore the breeds below to see the variety within the Sporting Group and learn more about each through their national parent clubs.
